How to stay organised if you’re messy?
People may know you as the least organised person or even the “messy one” – aka your parents/guardian. We have made a previous blog detailing how to declutter your workplace (we recommend reading that first). If you still are considered a messy person or struggling to be more organised, we have a few tips and tricks that may help you become more organised.
Building a visual Cortex
Since we are young, we have built our visual cortex, starting with differentiating between black and white objects to get a sense of dimension and spaces. As we get older, we can track moving objects thrown into the blue sky; therefore, as we got older, we develop a sense of knowing what things will go at what places. However, as you get older, you get many things, making it harder to know which something should be stored. And this gets harder over time if it is not treated right.
Overloading your stimulus
As mentioned before, the more things you get, the harder it gets to recognise the places where those things should go. As time goes one, you tend to focus less on putting them away, and they are left there on your bed or your study table. You become lazier, and things start to pile up, cluttering your working space. You wouldn’t realise the mess you have created because the mess itself has become a habit, but you will still get its consequences.
Mind trailing off when you should be focusing on a task? Your eyes tend to deviate elsewhere if you continue to focus on one exact thing over a long period. This results in your brain not being to focus on the task at hand, and instead, it tries to escape that and rather look at the leftover snack you had yesterday.
Order in chaos
You would only recognise the state you’re in when the things you’re hoarding becomes suffocating. Now, of course, you will be feeling overwhelmed amid chaos. You have to understand, it isn’t as much about mass, and it is about order when it comes to organising.
If you start making a conscious effort in placing things in the exact location, it will create a habit, and over a period, you will know to look for it at that place subconsciously. If you keep putting your keys in a different pocket each time, you will forget where you have put them to begin with. Even something as simple as getting a basket near your door to always put keys on will do the trick. Therefore, make a conscious effort – it will only benefit you in the long run.
Learn and adapt
Now even with that, you may be struggling in looking for the crucial things you need at the time. This will be a learning moment. Acknowledge where you look at the first time when you are trying to find it. Write it down even if you have to since it works for you. Once you have found it, the next important thing you need to do it put it at the place you have written down where it should be. Making sure you put them right after you have used them will guarantee that it will take less time for you to find things and more time fo the work you need to do.
